North Korea: Russia Shuts Down UN Tracking of Sanctions

UN Panel Investigating Russia's Alleged Sanctions Violations

South Korea Reports Suspected Intermediate-Range Missile Test by North Korea

The United Nations Security Council has suspended its investigative panel into alleged sanctions violations by Russia regarding North Korea. The move comes amidst growing tensions in the Korean peninsula following North Korea's recent missile tests.

The panel, known as the UN Panel of Experts on North Korea Sanctions, was established in 2017 to monitor and investigate compliance with UN sanctions imposed on North Korea. The panel's work includes tracking illicit activities such as arms trafficking, coal exports, and financial transactions that violate UN resolutions.

Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council, has been accused of supplying oil to North Korea in violation of UN sanctions. The UN Panel of Experts had been investigating these allegations.

Meanwhile, South Korea's military reported that North Korea test-fired a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile on Wednesday. The missile flew eastwards from Pyongyang for over an hour before landing in the sea west of Japan.

North Korea has launched several ballistic missiles over the past month, raising concerns about its nuclear and missile capabilities. The latest test comes just days after the US and South Korea conducted joint military exercises, a move that North Korea has condemned as a provocation.

The international community has expressed its concern over North Korea's missile tests. The UN Security Council has issued a statement condemning the launches and calling for North Korea to comply with UN resolutions.
